Many of my posts, recently, have been GCSE maths related. However, I do teach students from Year 3 (aged 7) and upwards. Today, I was working with a young student who needs to learn the months of the year. We had a lovely time singing together. Songs are a great way of learning those things which need to be committed to memory. For anyone interested, this is the song...

With lots of questions being asked about grade boundaries for the new GCSE at the moment, I thought this article might be of use to some. http://onmaths.com/episodes/2017-grade-boundaries/
This spring has certainly been the busiest term in Diss Maths Tutor's history. I have stated to myself, and others, on several occasions that I am fully booked for weekend and after school sessions. Each time, however, I have managed to 'fit in' an extra lesson. This has proved true this week. A student came for a 'half-term' only lesson and got so much from it that her parents decided they would like her to have a regular slot until she takes her SATs in May. Now, I really don't like not having availability, so have added another extra session to my tuition week. If you are thinking that you would like to book some tuition in the near future, I strongly recommend that you ask to be placed on my waiting list as empty spaces are filled very quickly. If, however, a regular session becomes available and you are on the waiting list, then I will contact you as soon as the vacancy appears, ensuring that you don't miss out. I am also able to offer students 'stand-by' lessons. This means that if I get a cancellation, then I may be able to fit you in. Of course, the day and time of these sessions can vary, but with 23 hours of tuition each week, cancellations due to sickness, holidays etc. do occur fairly regularly. Students who are actively on the 'stand-by' lesson list receive first refusal for regular sessions when they become available. Have you ever said "I'm not good at maths"? Has your son or daughter felt despondent because they think that they are "No good at maths"? You, or they, may feel like this, but it simply isn't true.
This article from the NCTM maths blog is certianily worth reading... http://www.nctm.org/Publications/Mathematics-Teacher/Blog/Everyone-Has-a-Personal-Green_s-Theorem/ It is always lovely to hear when someone is pleased with the work that I do. I received this 5/5 feedback to my Tutor Hunt profile yesterday. My job is to help and this parent clearly feels that I have done exactly that...
"Diane helped my ten year old Dyslexic son with prep on entrance exams. He really enjoyed working with her, and never complained about going. She systematically went through different areas with him, and identified areas of weakness. The tutoring worked really well, and I would highly recommend her." Last week's peak in enquiries has spilled over into this week and several more have turned into bookings. The new 9-1 GCSE mocks have really focussed the minds of those who are taking them this summer and there are lots of students out there who are determined to achieve the best possible results. For students wanting to revise using past paper questions, or just wanting to refresh their knowledge/practice particular skills and concepts I recommend https://corbettmaths.com/ and http://mathswebsite.com/ This really has been my busiest week ever for new enquiries. Earlier in the week, I received several enquiries, one of which led to a confirmed booking and I have already met the eager GCSE student. Today, I received three separate enquiries, which have all led to bookings. The first of these, I will meet tomorrow, and the others next week. I have already added another session to my availablity and now have only one regular weekly slot available at 6.30pm on Mondays. This week some of my students have been making good use of interlocking cubes to investigate some of the mysteries of maths.
My youngest student was using them to investigate how many different ways she could make 10 by grouping the cubes and recording her results, while my Year 5 students investigated square and cubed numbers. All of them enjoyed their lessons and came away with a greater understanding than they had at the beginning! During the school holidays there have been some changes to my timetable. These are the days and times I currently have available for regular weekly sessions:- Monday 2.30 - 3.25pm 6.30 - 7.25pm Thursday 6.30 - 7,25pm Saturday 3.30 - 4.25pm Please get in touch if you would like to book any of these sessions, whether online or face-to-face. I have been organising my diary for January onwards. I currently have the following regular weekly sessions available in 2017. These can be for face-to-face tuition or online tuition.
Monday 6.30 - 7.25pm Thursday 6.30 - 7.25pm Saturday 3pm - 4pm (possibility of this session changing to 2.30-3.30pm - to be confirmed). Please contact me if you would like to book a series of lessons. |
